What counts as a heating or cooling emergency?

  • No heating in winter

No working heating on a cold night, especially with elderly people, babies or anyone unwell at home.

  • No cooling in a heatwave

An air conditioner that has stopped during extreme heat, when someone at home is vulnerable to heat stress.

  • Burning smell or smoke

A burning smell, smoke or sparks from an indoor or outdoor unit.

  • Water leaking from the indoor unit

Water pouring or dripping steadily from a wall unit or ceiling vent.

  • Electrical smell

A hot plastic or electrical smell near the system, the isolator or the switchboard.

What should I do right now?

  • 01

    No heating in winter

Keep everyone in one room with the door closed, add layers and blankets, and use a safe electric heater if you have one. Never bring outdoor gas heaters, barbecues or anything that burns fuel inside, as they produce carbon monoxide.

  • 02

    No cooling in a heatwave

Close blinds and curtains, use fans, drink water regularly and spend the hottest hours somewhere air-conditioned such as a library or shopping centre. Call 000 if anyone shows signs of heatstroke.

  • 03

    Burning smell or smoke

Switch the system off at the isolator switch next to the unit, then call us. Do not turn it back on. If there is smoke or fire, leave the house and call 000.

  • 04

Water leaking from the indoor unit

Switch the unit off, put a towel or container underneath and keep water away from power points. A blocked condensate drain is the usual cause; call us to clear it.

  • 05

    Electrical smell

Switch the system off at the switchboard and stay clear of the unit. Call 000 if there is smoke or fire, then call us before the system is turned back on.

When to call 000

Call 000 if there is smoke or fire, if anyone is injured, if anyone shows signs of heatstroke or hypothermia, or if there is any other immediate danger to life.
